Transfer

In this blog post, you are exploring what it means to "transfer" knowledge from one situation to another. Begin by discussing what transfer means and how a student can achieve successful transfer according to the researchers of How People Learn (this means pull out evidence). What are contributing factors to successful transfer? Next extend your discussion to yourself: what prior knowledge did you come into the WRIT 1122 class with that has helped you with assignments--both homework and major/mini assignments? What do you believe you will transfer from WRIT 1122 and why (be very specific)? Where will you transfer this knowledge to? And conclude by wrapping your discussion up: why is transfer of knowledge important? Do you believe transfer happens whether you think about it or not?

DUE by class time on Monday, July 7, 2014. **Don't forget to respond to at least two of your peers' posts.

  1. According to the article, the factors to successful transfer are the degree of mastery of the original subject, learning with understanding, being realistic about the amount of time it takes to learn complex subject matter, the motivation to learn, the context of original learning and the instruction that helps students represent problems at higher levels of abstraction.

In my opinion, among these factors, the motivation to learn is the most important one. For instance, in this writing class, I spend my time and work hard because I want to pass this course. Also I want to develop my writing skills so that they could serve for my study and future career. Transfer of knowledge is important because the amount of knowledge that people can learn is limited. By transferring knowledge, people can make the best use of knowledge. After learning one subject, I might apply some useful materials from this subject to another subject. I believe transfer happens everyday because all knowledge are mutually connected and affected.

    1. I agree with your idea that the motivation to transfer is the most important one because students can truly get knowledge when they really want to get these knowledge. But I also believe that the skills and methods of transfer are significant too because those are the things that can improve transfer

    2. I also agree that the most important aspect of transfer of knowledge is the motivation to learn. I feel like today most students just want to pass a class and get a grade and they don’t even want to learn the material. It’s a sad reality that people are spending so much money to go to school and the students don’t really want to master the things they are learning in the classroom. I hope more people learn to become motivated about learning new things in the near future.

  2. Transfer is "the ability to extend what has been learned in one context to new contexts and it is always a function of relationships between what is learned and what is tested." There are several factors that affect a student's ability to achieve successful transfer. First, they need to have an adequate level of initial learning and this is affected by the degree to which students can problem solve, which is difficult to accomplish if students are only memorizing facts. Second, students need an appropriate amount of time to learn because significant learning requires a lot of time not only to learn the subject, but also time to process the information. Third, motivation is crucial and students are motivated when they can recognize that what they are learning is useful and they can in turn use it to make a positive impact. Finally, successful transfer is a "dynamic process that requires learners to actively choose and evaluate strategies, consider resources, and receive feedback.

All learning involves transfer from previous experiences and I know that I will definitely be transferring what I have learned in this class, Writing 1122, to my next writing class, which begins in about two weeks. Even though Writing 1133 will be more research oriented I know that I still be applying my knowledge of rhetorical situation, genre, audience, and reflection to everything I write.

Knowledge transfer is important because the goal of learning is to have access to information for a wide set of purposes so that we can transfer what we learn in school to our everyday environments. I think that sometimes we are able to transfer appropriate knowledge without thinking about it, but other times prompting is definitely necessary.

    2. Indeed. I believe that there is no point in being in school if we can't be able to use that we learn there in our life. Though, I prefer when transfer comes without me thinking about it, because when I do think about it, it means that I find the original matter boring. However, once i a while it is really necessary to think about it.

  3. According to the article transfer is the ability of extend what has been learned in one context to new contexts, it is a dynamic process of a particular set of learning experiences in which we use what we previously learned to understand new concepts that are related to the ones that we already know. The successful transfer of knowledge can be made if as students we match between the initial knowledge, which include making a connection to what we already know, a good management of time, motivation and the dynamic process that includes implications for the design that will help us learn it.

I came this writing class with nearly without knowledge in terms of American Academic writing, what i already knew were just some standards and some notions of basic organization, one of the reasons why this course is being helpful for me. And i stay glad because i will have a another opportunity to transfer all the knowledge that i learned here to the 1133 which will be the next writing class that i will take.

I believe that transfer knowledge is a significant aspect of our live specially as students because it makes so easier to understand it, and we are so used to do it that our mid does it unconsciously.

    1. I agree with your idea that transfer is important for our live. It is because transfer is the main process for most of us to understand knowledge and accept knowledge. I believe that when you can apply the knowledge to your projects, then you do well in transfer knowledge.

    2. I completely agree that transfer knowledge is especially to students because it does make it easier for us to learn. We are always building on past learned concepts and this helps us learn more difficult concepts. Transfer knowledge makes hard concepts easier to understand and build upon because we have the existing framework.

  4. In the article “Learning and Transfer,” the author gives the definition of transfer is that students can learn things by transferring things from one problem to another problem in school. Students can learn different things through the different methods of transfer. If a student wants to achieve successful transfer, he may need to get some initial learning, knowledge, and pervious learning. In the example of preparation for learning with understanding, the group 2 students who had the best performance in learning got some data from scheme experiments instead of reading the textbook. This shows that students need more direct, simple knowledge when they are learning new things.

There are also many factors to be successful in transfer. Firstly, transfer learning need to understand and memorize knowledge. Students need to remember knowledge and understand so that they can transfer knowledge to themselves. Secondly, students also need reflection and feedback from their study. It is important because students need to know how well they do. The feedback can guide what they need to do next and what are their shortages. What’s more, there are some other factors also affect the transfer, like context, problem representation, relationships between learning and transfer conditions, etc.

I learned some writing skills when I was in English Language Center. I learned some skills about outline, arguments writing and applied them into my homework and projects. When I take the WIRT 1122, I learn some writing skills about rhetoric situations, genre, and reflections. I think once I learned some new skills, I would applied them when I need to write something. At this moment, I transferred the knowledge from this course to myself.

    1. True, feedback is very important.Specially as a student, we need to know if our progress in good or not, because if we don't, we may end up learning something wrong, which may continue until "God Knows When".

    2. I agree that when we are first learning a brand new subject that we need to know the basic fundamentals before we dive into the complex details.

    3. I have the same experience with yours that I also learnt some basic concepts in the ELC and now I can transfer the knowledge I learnt there to my current study in writing. So I do think every thing we learn may be useful to our future study.

  5. According to the readings, transfer is "the ability to extend what has been learned in one context, to new contexts". In other words, it’s the capacity of learning about something, and use that something in other situations, disciplines, fields, etc. One evidence in the text was the experiment with the computer language LOGOS, where children were teach to identify and correct errors, in order to be capable of writing error-free programs.
The contributing factors to a successful transfer are the degree of mastery of the original subject, which means the level of understanding that the student already has ; the time spent to learn about a complex subject or matter; the use of contrasting cases to understand the original matter ; having the motivation to learn ; the capacity of learning in one context and succeed in using the same basis in other contexts and being able to represent the problems in more advanced ways of abstraction.
In Writing 1122 I learned to be capable of writing more consistent and organized texts, also the ability to write in wide variety of genres. This is very useful since writing will be incorporated almost everywhere in my major, which is engineering. Also, after reading the text, I thought about one even on my life that helped me to understand the importance of it: when I was in high school, the main question that I and almost all of my colleagues used to ask themselves was “what are we going to do with all this physics and math? They do nothing besides giving us a lot of headaches”. Now that I am in college, I started to see the reason for learning all that stuff, and the real life applications. Finally, I believe that transfer happens when you less expect it to happen. It usually comes in form of an “ohhhh, so that part can also be used here”. Kind of a sudden enlighten moment

    1. I do agree with you that now in this writing class we can learn how to write in different genres which makes the most sense to me. We have so many occasions that require us to write in different genres and we can transfer the knowledge we have learning to our future study and career.

  6. According to the article, transfer is defined as “the ability to extend what has been learned in one context to new contexts.” The author of this article also states that transfer “is always a function of relationships between what is learned and what is tested.” Transferring knowledge is a dynamic process of using previous knowledge to understand new ideas and concepts that we can relate to already known ones. Successful transfer is affected by four things: the degree with which the student is aware of the original subject (prior knowledge), the degree with which they learn by understanding, the amount of time allocated for students to appropriately learn the subject, and finally the amount of motivation the student has to learn. All these aspects are very important in transferring information and knowledge.

I came into this writing class with lots of knowledge of the writing process and writing techniques which has helped through Writing 1122 but I believe I’ll be transferring a lot more knowledge from this class. The concepts we learned about rhetorical situation, ethos, pathos, logos, etc. all will help me in the future with my writing. I’ll be able to apply these learned concepts to everyday life and especially in my schooling and job experiences.

I think transfer of knowledge is vitally important because we have to use prior knowledge every day. It’s so important when you’re faced with a new situation to build upon past experiences to figure out how to solve the dilemma you’re in. These past experiences will help you succeed and are a direct example of how successful transferring knowledge can be for you in the future. I don’t think we consciously think about transferring our knowledge all the time. I think when we’re faced with a new situation, past experiences and prior knowledge comes natural to us and we don’t have to think about what knowledge we have to transfer to use in the present situation.

    1. I agree that we are always building upon our prior knowledge and that we use what we already know to help us learn new things. I do think that most of the time we transfer knowledge without being conscious of it; however, sometimes we need some prompting to really push ourselves to succeed with knowledge transfer.

  8. While transfer is roughly the ability to learn from the past and applying our knowledge to current situations based on context, transfer contains several characteristics as well. These include according to the read that, as stated, initial learning is required for transfer, that context can at a certain point be detrimental, and the best transfer is active, based on previous learning. I think that in order to have a successful transfer, there has to be enough information for a student to catch inferences, yet a few sparing details removed, to provoke thought. Transfer is occurs constantly as well, although knowledge is not explicitly the only thing transferred.
I noticed that in transferring knowledge from this class, I am more likely to change the format of my paper based on what the expected format is. This is a lot different than a pure research paper, where it is strictly formal with no fancy formatting. This is a step for me in a different direction, I am really used to writing purely research papers and formal business writing, so getting to be creative again in writing is not only interesting, but refreshing. I think it will definitely change the way I look at writing assignments, even just in class ones, because I think there is a lot of value in recounting what you're learning, it reinforces what you're doing. Knowledge transfer is essential to the existence of society in the capacity we understand, means such as the internet and telecommunications have connected us to the point where transfer can take place constantly, without another person's input. This is, educationally speaking, a huge leap forward.

  9. Transfer according to the reading is using prior learning and applying it to other learning. They talked about different things that go into a successful transfer in learning which are: a students prior knowledge, they need context. Time to learn, the explanation of how chess masters play for 50,000 hours sums this up in that experience is everything. The want to learn is the final thing, students need to want to come out of the classes they take with more than just a grade, they need to have something that they can appreciate on a personal level so they'll be inclined to use it later.

In my experiences prior to this class I had written for specific audiences using ethos, pathos, and logos. This was during high school so the classroom setting was very different, but in a way I feel just being in a classroom for a long time transfers over to this class because discussion has been encouraged for most of my schooling. I believe that this was a good class to take because it offers a lot of useful material that can be easily transferred to other subjects. I plan to study business and writing is a crucial part of that, this class showed me a good example I will keep and it's the poster we did that appealed to an older audience for a book. That activity showed me how writing and knowing how to appeal to an audience can help me in the realm of business.

To conclude on transfer I'd like to say that I think it happens regardless of our knowing it. For instance when we drive we transfer previous driving experiences. This transfer is important because learning, to me, is like building up and to transfer is to build.

  10. “Transfer” in its simplest form is the process for when we use what we’ve previously learned to a new concept and or problem. Learning best occurs when we analyze what we’re trying to learn into a familiar instance. We need to understand how to apply ethos, pathos and logos into our writing. If we understand that whenever we compose we need to know our audience. Audience will help you determine the genre that best suits the pathos of your audience, you will be a successful writer. Reflecting on your composition will let you know if you are achieving logos. Whenever you receive constructive reflection you’re able to better yourself as a writer, catch your mistakes and learn from them. Utilize that “transfer” that allows you to make new mistakes from which you will end up learning again from and completing a never ending cycle. The text very clearly states more than once a clear and cut difference. If you want to be able to “transfer” your knowledge for future use you have to understand not memorize the information. We have to be able to critically analyze this new information.
I am somewhat older than most the students in the class, so I bring my previous job and personal experiences into the classroom. I probably have more experience than almost all of my classmates in regards to z professional setting, but other than that my academic experience is almost none existent. I can apply my critical reasoning into play and my “street smarts”. This I believe brings a unique touch to what I brought to WRIT 1122. I actually believe that taking WRIT classes early in my college will give me a solid foundation that I ca continue to grow on. I will take the concepts learned here to be able to keep improving myself. Ethos, pathos, logos, their direct relation to the audience which helps determine your genre. Reflecting on my writing and taking that criticism to the paper is something so simple, I don’t understand how I haven’t thought about it before.
Transfer of knowledge will not occur innately, it has to be a very conscious process. You take the information in, you analyze it, and you compare it to your world. It should eventually present itself in your everyday live and you will be able to react on it. As a foreigner that speaks English as his second language, I try to learn at least one word a week. I read this word, I hear its enunciation, I read how it’s used in different circumstances and without a doubt, I will hear this word quite often after that. It wasn’t that the word was never used before, it was that I didn’t understand/know it. But once learned, I transfer that knowledge to everyday life and I become more aware of its use.
